High tide forces 13 families to be evacuated in Sabak Bernam

SUNGAI BESAR: Forty victims from 13 families in Kampung Tanjung Medan, Sabak Bernam, have been evacuated to a temporary centre at SK Binjai Jaya due to high tide phenomena earlier on Friday (Oct 18) morning.

Selangor Northern Zone 7 Fire and Rescue Department chief Samsol Maarif Saibani reported that all 13 families were moved after seawater overflowed the bunds. The water level reached 5.9m, surpassing the forecast of 5.8m, and began flooding the village at about 4am.

"The bund height for the stretch is 5.5m, which was insufficient to hold back the rising seawater. Floodwaters reached 0.5m but receded by about 8am," he explained.

Samsol confirmed that no injuries were reported and said, "Our team is monitoring the situation, which is under control."

He mentioned that seven additional families, whose kitchen areas were flooded, relocated to relatives' homes nearby.

"Our operations included assistance from the Malaysia Civil Defence Force, police, Sabak Bernam District and Land Office, and Sabak Bernam District Council," he added.

The seawater overflow caused drainage runoff, affecting roads and houses.

In a nearby area, several roads, including Jalan Sungai Panjang, became impassable, forcing motorists to use alternative routes.

The National Hydrographic Centre forecasts peak tides of 5.7m with heavy rain at 6.54am tomorrow (Oct 19), and the following day (Oct 20) could see a high of 5.5m at 7.29am along Selangor’s coast.Sungai Besar, High Tide, Evacuation, Sabak Bernam, Kampung Tanjung Medan, SK Binjai Jaya, Selangor, Flooding, Malaysia Civil Defence Force, National Hydrographic Centre
