SARAWAK is targeting 60% student enrolment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by 2030.
Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said this was part of the state government’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Roland said that only 30% of students had registered in the STEM field in Sarawak so far.
“My ministry is committed to helping students achieve their dreams through the STEM field, based on the launch of various initiatives to promote STEM across the state, including programmes designed to make learning interactive and fun,” he said at the opening ceremony of STEM Hub and STEM Carnival, Badug STEM Mini Expo (BSMEx) 3.0 at SMK Padawan in Kuching.
“Events like the Mini STEM Expo are a great way to experience the creativity that STEM has to offer through competitions, hands-on activities and interesting workshops.
“We want students to see how STEM is not just a subject at school but an interesting part of everyday life.”
The Tarat assemblyman said his ministry was also focused on ensuring that teachers get the necessary support and resources to guide students.
“Although Sarawak government’s target of 60% STEM participation by 2030 may seem like a large number, I believe it can be achieved,” he said.
In the same ceremony, Roland witnessed the handing over of the Community Partnership Note Agreement signed between SMK Padawan and non-governmental organisation Lighthouse of Hope (Sarawak).
STEM Hub, an initiative by Lighthouse of Hope, started on April 16.
