STUDENTS from five primary and secondary schools, together with the local community in north Seberang Perai, collected an impressive 630kg of waste during a beach clean-up at Pantai Robina in Butterworth, Penang.
The 140 students and others had participated in the plogging event at the Robina Eco Park in Teluk Ayer Tawar.
State publisher Buletin Mutiara reported that the waste they collected included materials such as food waste, polystyrene, paper, plastic, rags, metal, and glass.
From the total collected, 548kg was recyclable.
The activity was part of the “Program Keceriaan Alam Sekitar @ Robina Park,” organised by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).
The event aimed to foster environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices.
The one-day programme featured an upcycling workshop, booths selling upcycled, recycled products and exhibition booths by state and federal agencies.
They provided information and resources on environmental protection and sustainable living.
Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid emphasised the importance of the programme’s goal to instil recycling habits and environmental responsibility in the younger generation and the local community.
“Our objective is to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and the need to practise waste segregation at the source.
“It is crucial that we educate both the younger generation and the wider community on how they can contribute to protecting the environment,” he said.
The programme was funded by a RM30,000 grant by the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
