RM20mil fix for Penang City Hall

Colonial-era Penang City Hall building.

Penang City Hall building in Jalan Padang Kota Lama, George Town, is set for extensive repairs.

Penang Island mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the RM20mil project was part of Penang Island City Council’s (MBPP) conservation initiative to begin in April next year.

He said there was urgent need for repairs as the iconic building had internal water leakage and termite infestation.

“It is crucial for MBPP to address these issues to prevent further deterioration,” he said, as reported by Buletin Mutiara.

“The restoration process is expected to be completed in two years. During this period, city council meetings will be held at Komtar.”

Constructed in 1903, Penang City Hall is a prominent colonial era landmark holding historical significance as one of the oldest municipal buildings in the country. The last major building restoration was in 2011.
