COMMUTERS and pedestrians have been reminded to keep clear of railway tracks, failing which, they will be penalised.
KTM Bhd gave the warning after Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) repaired a damaged fence along Jalan Gedung Raja Abdullah in Klang to prevent people from crossing the tracks.
“To prevent further trespass and for public safety, KTMB’s Track Engineering team replaced the damaged structure with a temporary 2.5m-long fence on both sides of the track on Oct 14,” KTMB said in a statement.
“RAC then replaced the temporary fence with a new barrier the following day to prevent future track crossings.
“Under Section 126 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, trespassers of railway or railway premises may be liable to a fine of up to RM1,000 upon conviction.”
KTMB said its auxiliary police intensified regular patrols at hotspots and would apprehend trespassers found crossing railway tracks.
A StarMetro article on Oct 15 titled “Hazardous shortcut in Klang town,” had reported people risking their lives to cross the railway tracks at that stretch after a section of the fence was damaged.
As of September this year, KTMB has recorded eight cases involving trespassers that resulted in injuries and fatalities.
“KTMB is actively engaging with RAC to construct more effective barriers at hotspot locations,” added KTMB in the statement.
Klang Consumer Association president A. Devadass, who had highlighted the matter, said he was glad that prompt action was taken by KTMB and RAC to stop future illegal crossing and trespassing incidents.
“Our association will work with KTMB and RAC to help prevent tragedies.
“We hope both agencies will also conduct an audit of fences from Teluk Pulai Station to Klang Station along the KTM Komuter line as there is a need to enhance safety measures at that stretch,” he said.
