HOBBYIST Lau Chee Kin has been acknowledged for having the largest Star Wars Funko Pop! collection in Malaysia.

Lau stamped his mark in the Malaysia Book of Records by collecting 802 Funko Pop! figures.

He began his collection in 2015 with his first Funko Pop!, Kylo Ren, inspired by the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“Around the same period, the Star Wars Malaysia Fan Club organised a quiz competition and I managed to bag a few more Funko Pop! toys.

“That got me looking for other characters to complete the set,” said the wealth manager.

All 802 figures in Lau’s collection were displayed during the Toys, Anime, Games and Comic Con (TAGCC) at Tropicana Gardens Mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Lau said the Funko Pop! figures caught his eye initially because of their cute variations of movie characters.

“My personal preference are the figures that artistically reinterpret the original design of the characters.”

His collection features eight autographed Funko Pops! authenticated with certification by Star Wars actors and voice actors, including Billie Dee Williams who played Lando Calrissian in the series.

According to Lau, the Grand Admiral Thrawn and Queen Amidala figures could fetch up to RM900.

“Do not let anyone judge you for your interest.

“Start small, collect what you love and let the passion drive you.

“Don’t worry too much about the numbers at first.

“Every collection is unique; it’s about the joy it brings you.

“Also, don’t forget to connect with other collectors as it’s a fun way to grow your knowledge and maybe even find rare pieces you’ve been hunting for,” he said.

Lau hopes more local characters will be featured in the Funko Pop! series.

“In Malaysia we have great shows such as Upin & Ipin, Boboiboy, Agent Ali and Keluang Man that are popular internationally,” he added.
