WITH over one million imported books, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale at Island 88 Mall (formerly Island Plaza) in Tanjung Tokong, Penang, is being touted as the world’s biggest book sale.

Until Nov 4, the books encompassing all genres for all ages, are on sale with up to 95% off retail prices.

Among the early birds was software engineer Yesu Raju, 38, who spent over two hours there and left with a bag full of books.

“It’s not always that we have fairs where books are offered at such a cheap price.

“As books at normal prices are costly, I resort to reading e-books on my tablet.

“I’m fond of horror and thriller novels and there are plenty of them in physical form here up for grabs.

“Coming in early increased my chances of picking up good deals before they are sold out,” he said.

Yesu was among dozens of eager bookworms who formed a queue well ahead of the fair’s opening at 10am last Thursday.

Shirley Ma, 29, from Indonesia, managed to fill her cart with books to be shared with friends and to be sold online.

“I have a partner in Surabaya who helps me sell the books and we run a business to provide books for children.

“Even with the added shipping cost, it is still cheaper to buy the books at the fair than buying them at normal prices,” she said, adding that she planned to spend at least RM10,000.

The event’s senior marketing manager Mandy Teoh said that by offering a vast selection of books, the fair catered to readers of all ages and interests.

“Attendees will find something to ignite their passion for reading.

“We aim to foster a love for literature and make this event an essential stop for both seasoned bibliophiles and those new to the world of books.

“There are special book titles available only for members for as low as RM4.99, and there are rebates for bigger purchases.”

Schools, colleges, universities and students were entitled to additional discounts, she said.
