SOME 60,000 people have registered for the Sabah Smart Parking mobile app, which is an initiative by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) to digitalise the city’s parking system.
Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said this was an encouraging response since the app was launched by its subsidiary DBKK Holdings Sdn Bhd on Oct 16.
He said they had received some complaints from the public about the app but chalked it up to folk learning a new system.
Among other issues, he said, people voiced concerns over the registration method of providing their birth dates as well as the last four digits of their identity cards to register for the app.
“This is because of the risk that their personal details will fall into the hands of scammers.
“But as we are aware, any system developed by both government departments and private companies is bound by law.
“This means that these details cannot simply be shared or sold to any party,” he said, assuring that the app was safe to use and had been approved by Bank Negara.
The digitalised parking system was among the priorities announced by Sabin when he took over as mayor in January.
The current parking system, which required motorists to purchase scratch coupons, had received public criticism regarding the system’s inconsistencies and practicality.
Sabin said motorists could still use the scratch coupons but only up to Nov 15, after which consumers must pay via the app.
He said, however, that motorists could convert their remaining balance from the coupons into credits in their registered accounts under the Sabah Smart Parking app.
“People can visit our counters to transfer the balance as credit into their app.
“They do not have to wait until Nov 15, so they can do it earlier to avoid long queues or congestion,” he said.
