Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) celebrated World Animal Day with a showcase of creatures small and tiny, furry, scaly and feathered.
The showcase in Ampang, Selangor, was aimed at improving awareness of the welfare of animals and strays.
Selangor SPCA chairman Christine Chin accompanied Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin who graced the event.
In her speech, Chin thanked Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin for being the patron of Stray Free Selangor (SFS), an SPCA initiative to reduce the number of strays in the state.
“Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin has been a wonderful supporter of our cause, whom we could not have done without,” said Chin.
“Since becoming our patron, Her Royal Highness has helped raise almost RM2mil to help spay and neuter strays in Selangor,” she added.
Some 13,700 animals have been spayed and neutered under the SFS initiative that was launched in 2017, according to an SPCA spokesperson.
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and Chin also gave tokens of appreciation to those involved in the “Potong Royong” programme, another spay-and-neuter initiative for cats and dogs, which has seen more than 2,400 strays sterilised statewide.
The World Animal Day celebration also featured various activities such as petting zoo courtesy of Farm in the City and reptile exhibition by Wildlife and National Parks Department, while Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) had a booth for residents to apply and renew dog licences.
There was also a demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Department K9 unit that enthralled the spectators.
Also present at the event were Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin and Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng.
