PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) was recognised with three awards from Malaysia Urban Planning Awards (Mupa) 2024.
They are: Housing and Local Government Minister’s Special Award for Best Planning Practices, Best Child Friendly Environment Award and Most Sustainable City Award, with cash prizes of RM10,000, RM5,000 and RM4,000 respectively.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming presented the awards at the national-level World Town Planning Day 2024 celebration in Putrajaya.
Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon credited the win to the hard work and dedication of MBPJ staff.
“I am just a successor. This is all thanks to my team’s hard work,” said the city’s seventh mayor when chairing MBPJ’s October full board meeting.
He described the minister’s special award as the “sweetest” win.
“This particular award was introduced for the first time at Mupa,” said Mohamad Zahri.
“It was open to both public and private organisations that had implemented the best practices based on city planning guidelines set by the Town and Country Planning Department (PlanMalaysia).
“Mupa offers recognition to all parties, including government agencies, private companies, non-governmental organisations, local leaders and local communities involved in developing the environment for a more inclusive living and sustainable future.”
The Most Sustainable City Award was presented based on the Malaysia Urban-Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development (Murninets), which has been implemented since 2002.
At the state-level World Town Planning Day 2024 celebration in Ampang, Selangor, MBPJ won the Most Sustainable City Award and Happiest City Award, with cash prizes of RM10,000 and RM5,000 respectively.
MBPJ also won in the local authority category for its dengue prevention efforts in the Environmental Health Campaign organised by the same ministry.
“Flat Impian Baiduri in Section 51A, Petaling Jaya, was chosen for the competition.
“The ministry allocated RM15,000 to the local councils for dengue eradication purposes over a four-month period.
“We carried out two gotong-royong sessions at the flats in June and July, which managed to reduce the number of dengue cases,” said Mohamad Zahri.
