GEORGE TOWN: Foodies found themselves in seventh heaven as the Penang International Food Festival (PIFF) @ Tanjong got off to a delicious start on Saturday (Nov 2).
Despite a brief downpour, thousands were able to savour an endless array of mouth-watering delights from some 100 stalls spread out mainly along Beach Street, as well as parts of Church Street and Bishop Street.
Many made a beeline to vendors offering Penang's famous hawker fare, while others went for inventive offerings from some of the island's popular restaurants and cafes.
Leading hotels also gave visitors a sampling of their signature items. And with wide varieties of sweet treats and beverages to boot, everyone had a fun day out.
Malaysian culinary celebrity Chef Zam was also on hand to share tips and recipes, while music and dance performances, both modern and traditional, kept crowds entertained.
A lion dance on stilts performance had many engrossed. Loud cheers greeted the appearance of social media stars Jestinna Kuan and Danny.
The event was organised by the office of Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, with the support of the state government and various private and public entities.
Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng said it was good to bring PIFF back to the heart of George Town, after being held at various venues across the state in previous years.
"It showcases the best food that Penang has to offer and proves that we really are a food heaven.
"We hope it satiates not only locals but also visitors from across the world. It gives them a sampling of everything we have in one place," Wong added.
The event continues on Sunday (Nov 3) from 5pm to 11pm - with more of the same delicacies and entertainment, such as a fire juggling act.
It will also have its second leg at Design Village in Batu Kawan next weekend (Nov 9 and 10) from 5pm to 11pm on both days.
