Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta, which has been held at Teluk Bahang Dam since the 1990s, will take place at a new venue this year.

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the event would be held at Straits Quay Marina on Nov 23 and 24.

“The change is due to low water level at the dam, which is at around 30%, a stark contrast from 90% last year.

“Considering that dragon boat races abroad are traditionally held at sea, we decided to shift the event to Straits Quay Marina,” he said at a press conference in Komtar.

State publisher Buletin Mutiara quoted Wong as saying that the event used to be held at Gurney Drive before it was moved to Teluk Bahang Dam.

About 70 teams from 12 countries are expected.

Wong was confident the international teams would adapt to the new venue.
