CANCER survivors and members of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) gathered in Penang to mark World Breast Cancer Awareness Month over high-tea.
They met at a restaurant in Bukit Mertajam for a fundraising and sharing session organised by Yayasan Kasih Kanser dan Kronik (YKKK), which is dedicated to helping patients cope.
Guest-of-honour Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said, “Those dealing with breast cancer cannot struggle alone.
“They need both emotional support and the benefit of the experience of other cancer survivors.”
Also present was former Penang education director Datuk Abdul Said Hussain.
YKKK vice-president Datuk Seri Abdul Malik Abdullah, also founder of D’Tandoor Group of Restaurants, said early detection, education, community support, regular screening and self-examination were the best ways to improve survival rates among breast cancer patients.
Abdul Malik said the foundation also organised a Pink Walk programme in Kota Baru, Kelantan, that had 2,500 participants.
He said the event, to raise cancer awareness in rural areas, saw RM40,795 donated by individuals and corporate entities. — By IMRAN HILMY
