PETALING JAYA: A residents' coalition is urging the Kuala Lumpur mayor to grant National Heritage Trust (Amanah Warisan Negara) status for permanent ownership of the land on which Taman Tugu sits.

“Taman Tugu is currently under a 99-year lease. We hope that the land will be granted permanent status so that this heritage can be preserved for future generations,” said Kuala Lumpur Residents Action for Sustainable Development Association (KLRA+SD) in a post on social media.

“We urge Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to strive towards improving the process of de-gazetting public land.

“We feel the process needs to be more transparent and involve city folk by providing a more comprehensive overview, so that city folk can assess the justification for the de-gazettement,” the association said.

KLRA+SD said a group comprising KLRA+SD committee members and its Redevelopment Task Force were invited to meet Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif to discuss issues faced by residents.

The meeting was held on Oct 29 afternoon at the mayor’s office at Menara DBKL, Kuala Lumpur.

“During the meeting, our Redevelopment Task Force informed the mayor about the methods being used by parties claiming to represent developers and were pressuring city folk into signing redevelopment consent forms,” said KLRA+SD.

“Representatives from areas identified by DBKL (as potential redevelopment sites) were also present to inform Maimunah about the challenges they are facing.

“Other issues raised during the meeting included protection of public land and green spaces and the negative experiences of several areas currently undergoing redevelopment.”

KLRA+SD said Maimunah had assured them that DBKL would prepare a report regarding the issues highlighted to her and that they would be presented by DBKL at a relevant platform.

“She believes that DBKL's and KLRA+SD’s objectives are aligned, to ensure Kuala Lumpur is developed sustainably,” said KLRA+SD.

“The mayor also invited KLRA+SD to continue engaging with her through periodic meetings.

“We are confident that DBKL will improve its delivery service to city folk under the good governance values promoted by the mayor, namely competent, accountable, transparent, effective and efficient.”

KLRA+SD added that its coalition was ready to work together with Maimunah and City Hall to realise the aspiration of making Kuala Lumpur a “Liveable and Lovable City”.
