PENANG Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow paid tribute to journalists for their unwavering commitment to informing the public, particularly during challenging times.
Speaking at the Penang Press Nite 2024, Chow expressed his deep appreciation for the journalism field, recognising their role as a crucial pillar for Penang’s media professionals.
He commended both current journalists and retired veterans for their continued inspiration.
“I am honoured to gather with my friends in the newspaper industry,” he said.
Reflecting on recent challenges, Chow acknowledged the numerous hurdles faced by the country and the state, including global economic shifts, post-Covid-19 pandemic recovery, natural disasters, and climate-related issues.
In the face of these challenges, he highlighted the dedication of journalists to keep the public informed.
Drawing from his own experience as a former journalist, Chow empathised with the daily pressures faced by media professionals.
He commended their commitment to delivering accurate and timely news, often working tirelessly under increased workloads and reduced resources.
“I understand how you work tirelessly to cover every corner of Penang, rain or shine.
“You are not just disseminators of information but also defenders of truth and guides of public opinion,” he said, underscoring the responsibility of journalists to uphold accuracy while meeting the demands of real-time reporting.
Chow reaffirmed the Penang government’s commitment to collaborating with the media, recognising their crucial role in amplifying the voices and needs of the people.
He said the media served as a vital bridge between the government and the public, providing valuable feedback that informed policy decisions.
Chow’s remarks highlighted the importance of continued cooperation to maintain Penang’s stability and transparency.
His pledge to uphold media freedom and independence was met with applause from the audience.
These sentiments set the stage for the annual Penang Press Nite 2024, which brought together approximately 450 individuals from the media, government and diplomatic circles.
Notable attendees included Penang Press Employees Cooperative Society Ltd chairman Lim Beng Poh, Consul of the People’s Republic of China in Penang Wu Tian Hao, Penang Press Club life patron Datuk Seri Khor Teng Tong, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng.
Also present were Journalists Union of North Malaya chairman Datuk Lean Yee Yong, Penang Press Employees Cooperative Society Limited executive adviser Wong Soon Eng, Penang Press Club affair adviser Neoh Chong Poh, Penang Press Club executive adviser Tan Hu Chuan and Penang Press Club president Ang Tong Kai.
The event, jointly organised by the Penang Press Employees Cooperative Society Ltd, the Penang Press Club and the Journalists Union of North Malaya, was a memorable gathering that celebrated the camaraderie among media professionals.
Lean, who is also the event’s organising chairman, urged traditional media to uphold their core principles, cautioning against compromising quality for increased online traffic.
He underscored the importance of recruiting new talent to ensure the continuity and growth of Malaysia’s journalism sector, while encouraging traditional media to maintain its unique style and promote positive messages.
The night’s highlight was the much-anticipated lucky draw, with a motorcycle as the grand prize.
Chow also contributed to the event by donating RM15,000 to the three press organisations.
