Oil palm future for Ibans in Kanowit

OIL palm cultivation is a potential source of income for Ibans in Kanowit, Sarawak.

Kanowit MP Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang said the crop could generate a monthly income of up to RM6,000 per household.

Aaron, who is also National Unity Minister, said Mid-Rajang Regional Development Agency (MiRRDA) had designated oil palm cultivation as its primary economic project and core agricultural initiative for Kanowit.

Speaking during a meet-the-people session at Rumah Adrian Luang, Bukit Temedak in Bawan, he said MiRRDA was finalising allocations to support oil palm development, including aid in the form of seedlings, fertiliser and land maintenance.

“Those with land are encouraged to join the programme, which is planned to be implemented next year,” he said.

In addition to improving livelihoods, he said MiRRDA was also planning infrastructure projects, including road construction to support agricultural activities.

Education support is also a priority, he said, with allocations distributed to assist schoolchildren.

“MiRRDA’s jurisdiction includes Kakus, Tamin, Ngemah and Machan state constituencies, covering the Kanowit and Selangau parliamentary areas.

“We are committed to advancing infrastructure, utilities, the economy and education,” he added.

At the function, Aaron presented minor rural project (MRP) grants totalling RM762,000 to 88 recipients, including schools, mosques, churches and temples.

He also inaugurated the Bukit Temedak community kitchen at the longhouse. — By ANDY CHUA
