Former students recognised for giving back to school, society
IT WAS a memorable night for over 500 former students of SMK La Salle Klang who attended their most recent annual reunion in Shah Alam, Selangor.
At the event, five outstanding alumni who had showcased leadership, dedication as well as generosity – exemplifying La Sallian values of service and excellence – were given appreciation awards for their contribution to the school and society.
Old Lasallians Association of Klang (Olak) president Ho King Min said the recipients had enriched the community and paved the way for future generations.
“May their success and contributions inspire and motivate us all to strive for excellence in our own journeys.
“We have the highest turnout for the reunion in recent times. We hope for more active participation from the younger generation.
“Olak will be organising a fun run event in 2025 to support the school.
“Alone we can do little but together we can do much,” Ho added.
One of the five individuals is Joseph De Silva, a driving force in the growth of youth hockey and a founding member of Olak.
“His involvement with Selangor Hockey Association and Malaysia Games (Sukma) has inspired generations of players,” said Ho.
Another recipient, Datuk Yeo Kim Thong had served St John Ambulance for over 40 years, showcasing his dedication to volunteerism.
“He has generously contributed all the musical instruments for the La Salle Klang band and supported student programmes and infrastructure projects,” Ho highlighted.
CJ Century Logistics Holdings Bhd chief executive officer Steven Teow Choo Hing, a leader in the logistics industry, was also a recipient of the award.
“Teow has also been a generous supporter of the school, contributing to its development through infrastructure upgrades and student programmes,” Ho noted.
Recipient Jayandra Kody was the school’s Parent-Teacher Association chairman between 2011 and 2017.
Ho said Jayandra brought significant improvements to the institution, including the revival of the school band, installation of smart TV sets, WiFi upgrades and refurbishment of the school field and road.
CJ Century Logistics founder Datuk Richard Phua Sin Mo, a recipient as well, has been supporting building upgrades and student programmes.
Guest of honour at the reunion was Selayang MP William Leong, who studied at the school from Standard One to Form Three.
“I’m sure we all appreciate our education at missionary schools,” he said.
“We built our character while learning good values.
“These schools and their dedicated teachers have made a significant contribution to Malaysian society,” Leong added.
