A rundown playground along Jalan SS25/20 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, is being fitted with a jogging track.

Costing RM398,000, the track will be completed by the end of January 2025.

“This project will include construction of a jogging track, installation of three pieces of outdoor exercise equipment and upgrade of the drainage system to prevent water ponding on the track,” said councillor John Leong during a visit to parks in his area.

He added that beautification works would take place at the playground once the track was completed.

The Zone 7 councillor then pointed out how the Sungai Kayu Ara riverbank facing the playground was undergoing works by Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department.

The project would create paths enabling residents to walk by the river, he added.

Further community activities are also possible at a community park near Jalan SS25/30 now that four LED street lights have been installed along the road.

Leong said these low-maintenance lights, which cost RM49,000, would enable residents to plan evening recreational activities.

Rukun Tetangga SS25 chairman Chan Swee Yeng said the lights also increased safety in the area.

“We have tai chi, qigong and yoga in the morning.

“Now, we can hold night sessions for these exercise activities.

“Our residents go for walks in the morning and now they can also exercise during the early morning and at night.

“We are thankful for the upgrade works and glad that our request for this lighting was considered,” said Chan.

Meanwhile, Leong said Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) would now use Sirim-certified polyolefin resicushion mats for playgrounds.

These mats have been installed at the playground along Jalan SS25/30.

The councillor explained that these mats were 5cm thick, waterproof, fire-resistant and recyclable.

“Previously, most of these rubber mats were easily damaged and sometimes caused water ponding.

“The new type of mat is sturdy and comes with a six-year warranty.

“We have trialled it and it seems to be good,” he said.
