Corporate head in record book for triathlon feat

BEING an entrepreneur in the corporate world, Datuk Seri Dr Vincent Tiew hardly had time for physical exercise.

That changed in 2021 when the KL Wellness City (KLWC) branding, sales and marketing director signed up for swimming lessons.

“Prior to that, I had experienced significant weight loss and that gave me the confidence to do activities which I hadn’t done before.

“I soon got involved in physical activities such as triathlons,” he said.

A year later, Tiew took part in an Ironman triathlon which became a passion that has transformed his life.

Organised by the World Triathlon Corporation, an Ironman race comprises a 3.86km swim, 180.25km bicycle ride and 42.2km marathon – all completed in succession.

“There is something incredibly rewarding about being able to cross the finish line despite the demanding physical challenges,” said Tiew who earned Malaysia Book of Records recognition for having completed the most number of Ironman triathlons – 11 within 24 months – among entrepreneurs.

He was presented with a certificate during an event in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

Tiew thanked his family and KLWC staff for their support, and said that he planned to participate in more sporting events next year.

“I have signed up for races in France and Spain.

“I hope my achievement will inspire others in the business community as well senior citizens to stay fit and active.

“It is never too late as I saw many people in their 60s and 70s taking part in events I had joined,” he said.

He added that proper nutrition and regular training were key in participating in such gruelling sports events.

Guest-of-honour and Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin described Tiew’s accomplishments as being a motivation to others.

“His achievement reflects not only his physical endurance but also his determination and mental fortitude,” he said.

Separately, Yeoh expressed hope that KLWC, located in Bukit Jalil, would help position Malaysia as a medical tourism hub in the region.
