COASTAL areas in Selangor are on alert as high tides are expected tomorrow and Saturday.

Tides of up to 5.5m are expected at 5.07am on Friday and 5.5m at 5.50am on Saturday, with a possibility of flash floods if it coincides with heavy rains during that time.

National Hydrographic Centre in Port Klang said the high tide phenomenon was forecast for early mornings during the two days.

Port Klang Fire and Rescue station operations chief Mohd Fauzi Ramli said flooding could occur if the high tide coincided with continuous rain.

“We advise those living near rivers and coastal areas to be vigilant, especially if it rains continuously,” he said.

“The hydrographic centre forecasted that the high tide should not breach the bunds. If water goes over, it may just flow into scupper drains,” he said.

Areas in Klang particularly vulnerable to the high-tide phenomenon are Kampung Delek, Sungai Udang, Pengkalan Tok Muda, 4th Mile of Jalan Kapar, Bund Sementa, Port Klang, Jalan Pandamaran Banting and Taman Selat Damai in Pendamar, Port Klang.

Mohd Fauzi reminded residents in high-risk areas to follow authorities’ instructions in the event of flash floods.

“People should avoid boating activities and fishing trips along the coastline,” he said.

He added that firemen were on high alert and were prepared to handle any disaster.

Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) enforcement chief Andry Arman Masrom said its Swift Action Task Force (Pantas) would be watching out for bund breaches and heavy flow in rivers and canals at areas which had previously faced high tides.

MBDK closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) unit, which monitors traffic, will also be on the look out for flash floods.

He said the city council would liaise with the Fire and Rescue Services Department as well as the Civil Defence Force to activate rescue missions.

Andry encouraged residents to prepare themselves by keeping documents and essential items in an emergency bag.
