Penang’s Christmas celebration this year at Padang Dataran Pemuda Merdeka in Butterworth promises to be an exciting evening brimming with joy, community spirit and festive cheer.
State social development, welfare and non-Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said there would be exciting activities including a vibrant Christmas market, engaging performances and offerings from food trucks.
“It promises to be an evening filled with festive cheer and wonderful experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds,” she said in a press conference at Penang Harmony Centre in George Town.
State publisher Buletin Mutiara reported that the Dec 7 event, themed “Tidings of Great Joy,” will run from 5pm to 10pm.
Lim said in recent years, the event venue had alternated between Penang island and mainland to increase accessibility and boost community participation.
Previous events were hosted at Fort Cornwallis or Esplanade on the island.
“This event is more than just a festive occasion. It is a meaningful opportunity to learn from one another, celebrate our diversity and foster harmony within our community,” she said.
“The theme is a reminder that regardless of our backgrounds, we can come together to share in the joy of the season.”
The celebration is a collaboration between Penang government through Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico) and key partners such as Christian Federation of Malaysia (Penang chapter) and local churches, with cooperation from Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).
Lim said the state government was committed to celebrating diversity through religious festivals.
“In partnership with various faith organisations, Penang government aims to empower communities to actively shape these events, promoting understanding and celebrating our differences.”
Present at the press conference were Christian Federation of Malaysia (Penang chapter) chairman and Harmonico director Arokiadass Anthonysamy, organising chairman Bishop Rev Dr Stephen Soe, Harmonico programme management head Wan Atikah Wan Yusoff and volunteer Samuel Gopal.
Recognising the hard work of its organising committee, which included representatives from various churches and denominations, Soe said they were excited to come together to create lasting memories this Christmas.
After facing the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Soe said previous Christmas celebrations embraced themes of hope and recovery.
Last year, the theme was “Light of the World”, symbolising renewed optimism.
“This year’s theme, ‘Tidings of Great Joy’, reflects our collective journey,” said Soe.
“We invite everyone to join us in celebrating joy, happiness and gratitude.
“Let us create a Christmas celebration that embodies these values while recognising the many blessings we’ve received.”
