Ipoh club pledges to aid fire victims

Lions Club of Perak Silver State has pledged to assist in the rebuilding of a house at Kampung Pasir Putih in Ipoh, Perak, that was destroyed in a September blaze.

Club president Richard Ng said he was contacted by the village representative for help, and visited the family with other club members, bringing along groceries and some cash.

“After assessing the situation, I contacted my Lions Club International 308B2 District Governor, Don Hoe Chin Aik, for the Disaster Relief fund.”

Hoe also visited the family in October, Ng said, adding that work on the house was currently about 20% completed.

Ng said after listening to the family’s plight and seeing their living conditions, Hoe added RM1,000 assistance for materials to speed up building a new accommodation for the family of 10.

“He (Hoe) assured the family that he will mobilise more Lion members to follow up and provide other assistance required,” he said.

Relating the incident, Ng said homeowner Nor Shahriza Ismail noticed smoke coming out of her electric meter before the whole house went up in flames.

She rushed her eight children out of the house without much thought of salvaging any belongings.

“At that time, her husband was at work,” Ng said of the 1.45pm fire on

Sept 3.

“She lost all the family’s belongings including the children’s birth certificates and identification cards, a motorcycle, television, fridge and all the furniture.

“She contacted the village representative for assistance, who then approached me for help,” Ng said. — By MANJIT KAUR
