A lecture theatre at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) in Kampar, Perak, has been named after the late Tan Sri Dr Teh Hong Piow, founder of Public Bank – a personality renowned for his exemplary leadership.
Hong Piow’s daughter Teh Li Shian Diona, Public Bank’s managing director and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tay Ah Lek, deputy chief executive officer Datuk Chang Kat Kiam, Utar chancellor Tun Ling Liong Sik, Utar Education Foundation board of trustees chairman Tan Sri Dr Sak Cheng Lum, Utar president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat and Utar Hospital chief executive officer Prof Dr Lau Hui Ping joined guests at the launch on campus.
This naming of the theatre is in recognition of Hong Piow’s philanthropy where he donated RM20mil to the university.
His contribution helped make education accessible to many individuals giving them the opportunity to achieve their dreams.
A recent donation of RM2mil towards the development of Utar Hospital – a teaching hospital – also strengthened Hong Piow’s commitment to nurturing medical students.
Hong Piow’s generosity played a pivotal role in fostering the development talent within the university, paving the way forward for students in various fields of study.
The lecture theatre and Wall of Fame reflect Utar’s commitment in upholding Hong Piow’s belief for the need to propel towards education excellence.
Li Shian Diona, who is Hong Piow’s youngest daughter, said, “By naming this lecture theatre in his honour, we commemorate his contributions and inspire future generations to strive for greatness in their pursuits.
“It was more than just a dedication – it is a continuation of his life’s work, dreams and values.”
She added, “He used to talk passionately about how education can change society and that is one of my favourite memories of him.
“In his opinion, education would enable people to create their own lives and benefit those around them.
“He often said knowledge is the key that opens every door.
“He reminded me that the only reason he could go from modest beginnings to founding Public Bank was his opportunities to develop and learn.”
Dr Sak said, “Today, we gather to celebrate the legacy of the late Tan Sri Dr Teh Hong Piow.
“His generosity and philanthropy have touched countless lives and his belief in education has also transformed lives and helped create better futures for many others.
“We are thankful and honoured to be able to share and uphold his beliefs, through this lecture theatre and Wall of Fame, which will inspire students to strive for excellence and encourage them to showcase their talent, skills and intellect in contributing towards society and the nation.”
The lecture theatre, located in Block H of the Faculty of Business and Finance, serves to inspire the younger generation to dream big and pursue their ambitions with unwavering dedication.
