TO highlight its commitment towards responsible supply chain management and environmental and social governance (ESG), Carlsberg Malaysia held its inaugural Supplier Day.
The event, attended by 64 upstream and manpower suppliers, focused on the brewer’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions.
Suppliers were taken on a tour of the brewery and briefed on the company’s stance on responsible sourcing practices, human rights compliance as well as updates on labour and environmental regulations.
Invited speakers from UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei, Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM) and Sedex Asia shared insights on key ESG issues.
Carlsberg Malaysia also emphasised the importance of adhering to its supplier and licensee code of conduct.
The company urged suppliers to stay informed about regulatory changes at both local and international level.
It emphasised human rights principles that included fair labour practices, preventing discrimination and safeguarding the rights of employees and contractual workers.
As a member of Sedex, Carlsberg Malaysia encouraged its suppliers to join the platform to enhance their ESG performance and meet their supply chain sustainability goals.
Sedex focuses on four key areas of responsible sourcing, namely human rights and labour standards, health and safety, environment and business integrity.
Carlsberg Malaysia also supports Simplified ESG Disclosure Guide (SEDG) designed by CMM to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) streamline ESG reporting.
“Since the launch of our ‘Together towards Zero and Beyond ESG’ programme two years ago, we have made positive strides in delivering our ESG priorities in pursuit of our purpose of ‘Brewing for a Better Today and Tomorrow’,” said Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini.
“We have an ambitious goal to achieve zero carbon emissions in our brewery by 2030.
“However, we cannot do this alone.
“We invite our suppliers to collaborate with us on this green transition journey,” he said.
The event included presentations by industry experts.
UN Global Compact Network Academy lead trainer Sudarsan Chandra Sekharan featured case studies on sustainable business practices which highlighted ESG teamworking between companies and their supply chains.
“The partnership between Carlsberg Malaysia and its suppliers shows commitment to raising awareness throughout the supply chain.
“We aim to foster innovation and resource sharing to help organisations meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” said Sekharan.
Another speaker was CMM general manager Navina Balasingam who discussed responsible sourcing mechanisms and ESG disclosure standards.
Other speakers included Carlsberg group procurement senior manager of responsible sourcing Janna Dietrich and Sedex Asia strategic account manager Clare Lam.
“Carlsberg Malaysia is the first in the Carlsberg group to conduct a ‘Supplier Day’ to collaborate with suppliers in driving our ‘Responsible Sourcing’ ambitions,” said Dietrich.
“This has allowed us to engage with key upstream suppliers to enrol in Sedex in order to comply with responsible sourcing standards and meet external due diligence requirements.”
