Penalties for policemen involved in drug-related activities will be severe.
These consequences include suspension or dismissal, warns Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.
He said there would be zero tolerance for officers or personnel involved in such offences.
“There will be no compromise for any officer or staff in the state contingent if they are found to be involved in activities that could tarnish the reputation of the force,” he said.
Comm Hamzah told reporters this after witnessing the handover of duties between acting George Town OCPD Supt Lee Swee Sake and newly appointed OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad at the George Town police headquarters in Patani Road.
This year, six police personnel in Penang were reported to have been involved in drug-related cases.
Comm Hamzah urged his men to learn from these incidents, stressing the need for integrity and good governance to uphold policies that would restore public confidence.
Emphasising the importance of tackling drug issues, discipline and misconduct within the force, he said the focus would be on preventing involvement in drugs or crime while addressing service shortcomings.
On ACP Abdul Rozak’s appointment, Comm Hamzah said he knew him well and had full confidence that he would excel in his new role as OCPD.
He also praised Supt Lee for his excellent performance as acting OCPD.
ACP Abdul Rozak vowed to strengthen the collaboration with the public and media in crime prevention, emphasising that tackling crime required collective effort, not just police work.
“Effective crime prevention relies on strong cooperation with the media, public and local authorities,” he said.
Prior to his appointment, ACP Abdul Rozak served in Terengganu as Besut OCPD for five years.
Having started his career as an inspector, the 56-year-old has 31 years of service under his belt.
