RM1mil aid for 500 tertiary students

TO inspire undergraduates to continue doing their best in their studies, the Sultanah Fatimah Foundation (YSF) has provided financial aid worth RM1mil to Southern University College’s (SUC) students.

Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon, who is also a YSF board member, said the aid would benefit 500 students at the institution.

“Over the years, the state government has been providing monetary assistance to the university to help reduce its burden in handling costs of operations and infrastructure.

“However, this is the first time that financial support is being directly handed to students in need.

“The allocation, totalling RM1mil, will alleviate the burden for 500 students, each of whom will receive RM2,000.

“We hope that this gesture of care will inspire and motivate students to do well in their studies,” he said in his speech during the aid presentation ceremony.

Held at the university’s Dato’ Seri Joseph Chong Hall, the ceremony was also attended by YSF chairman Mejar Cina Datuk David Wong Khong Soon.

Separately, Southern Foundation (SF) held a simple appreciation ceremony to thank donors for their support over the years.

SF chairman Datuk Steve Chong Yoon On said Southern Foundation aimed to provide aid worth RM1mil in scholarships to 100 students from the university.

“If you (students) are in need, please come to us. We will extend our hands and process your application as smoothly as possible.

“Our aim is to have 100 members give to 100 students who will each receive support valued at RM10,000. There is no repayment scheme involved.

“I encourage students to take advantage of donors’ generosity and apply for the scholarships,” he said.

Chong also thanked donors for their long-time support which has enabled students facing financial woes to continue their studies.

“As we look forward, I sincerely invite donors to continue supporting SF.

“Your contribution will directly empower needy students to achieve their academic goals.”
