THE historic Ban Canal in Sabak Bernam, Selangor, a lifeline for padi farmers since the colonial era, is now the centrepiece of a growing eco-tourism initiative that promotes tradition, nature and sustainability in the district.

The canal, known locally as “Bangkenal,” was originally built through a collaborative effort between villagers and the British administration, serving as an essential irrigation system for the surrounding padi fields from Tanjong Karang to Sabak Bernam.

First introduced in 2022, the carnival has since become a flagship programme under the Sabak Bernam Development Area (SABDA), which is an initiative under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).

The third edition will take place from tomorrow until Dec 1 at Parit 14, Simpang Lima.

Selangor rural development, unity and consumers committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail, who is also Sabak Bernam Consultative Council chairman, said more than 20,000 visitors are expected to attend the event, which will be officiated by Selangor Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on Nov 26.

The event will feature a variety of activities, from kayak marathons and traditional boat races to wall climbing and flying fox adventures.

There will also be cultural activities, including a Tazkirah session and a Ban Canal concert, as well as free health screenings.

Visitors can enjoy traditional cuisine unique to the area, buy agricultural produce, and browse through merchandise stalls run by the surrounding community.

“Ban Canal is a platform to introduce the uniqueness and natural beauty, culture and economy of Sabak Bernam.

“It is not just a leisure event, but it is a symbolic event, demonstrating the sustainability and prosperity of the local community,” Rizam said.

“Equipment for some of the events, such as the kayak marathon and sprint, will be provided by the organisers but those who have their own equipment are also welcome,” he added.

Rizam said most of the events would not incur a charge, but activities that required payment would be priced reasonably.

Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop said the event managed to attract a growing number of visitors, from 3,000 in the first year to 13,800 last year.

“We have also increased the number of traders for this year’s event, with 12 booths and six food trucks, to cater for the expected increase in visitors over the six days.

“There will also be activities for students and youths who are interested in water sports at the venue, as well as fun activities for young children,” Saipolyazan said.

He added that the organisers would also improve the parking and transport facilities for a better visitor experience.

“We welcome all to drop by the event and enjoy the special offerings that are unique to the area,” he said.

Selangor local government and gourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, who is also the Sabak Bernam Consultative Council vice-chairman, added that the event would be treated as early preparations for next year’s edition, which coincides with the Visit Selangor Year campaign.

“The event attracts not just domestic visitors but people from other regions, creating great exposure for the cultural and heritage offerings in Sabak Bernam, as well as creating a spillover effect into the surrounding tourist areas and businesses,” Ng said.
