WITH consumers pushing the fashion industry to reduce its environmental impact, fashion students and professionals are focusing on sustainable and innovative creations as well as upcycling.

Management and Science University (MSU) president and founder Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid said the fashion industry was transforming due to the need for sustainable practices and consumer preferences.

“Sustainability is no longer an option,” he said when met after opening the university’s Modest Selangor Runway event themed “Championing Heritage and Culture Appreciation”, held in conjunction with MSU Fashion Week 2024 at its campus in Shah Alam, Selangor.

He said circular fashion and ethical sourcing were becoming the norm as the fashion industry needed to adopt sustainable ways of production.

“Understanding sustainable practices in the fashion industry is crucial for future success.

“MSU students are being guided on sustainable methods.”

He said the university would continue to strengthen the creativity and innovativeness of its fashion design students.

“MSU, through the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SCHA), organised this event to provide an avenue for students to express their creativity.

“This is the show’s second edition and is a collaboration between the students, alumni, MSU and UEDA College of Fashion, a leading fashion school in Japan.”

Prof Mohd Shukri said the partnership with UEDA College of Fashion helped MSU students gain global exposure.

The university also hosted a fashion exhibition themed “Contemporary Ancestry” alongside activities involving upcycling, Issey Miyake 3D modelling and design, cold wax batik and environmentally friendly fabric printing.

The catwalk show saw the unveiling of 49 creations by MSU students pursuing their honours degrees in Fashion Design with Marketing, or fashion design diplomas.

“The MSU x UEDA Gakuen Fashion Show 2024 featured 10 creations while the Hijab Collection presented 10 creations of MSU alumni.

“There were also 12 men’s garments and 17 womenswear items in line with the theme,” said Prof Mohd Shukri.

Present at the event were UEDA College of Fashion Japan president Hitoshi Tajima, SHCA dean Azizul Jamaludin and MSU senior management and industry partners.
