MORE multi-agency meetings will be held to coordinate flood mitigation measures in the Klang district, says Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Izham Hashim.
“There is a perception that flood mitigation measures are only under the purview of Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID),” he said at the Selangor State Assembly Sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.
“However, there are some that come under the purview of district offices and local councils as these agencies oversee the internal drainage systems in villages and housing areas.
“Some floods are localised or happen within specific areas under local agencies.
“Hence, there is a need for better coordinated meetings to streamline measures and to address floods and mitigation projects at all levels,” he said.
Izham said all agencies had also been asked to provide an update to his office on their flood upgrading projects for the next five years, for better coordination.
The Pandan Indah assemblyman was responding to a question by Tony Leong Tuck Chee (PH-Pandamaran), who said the flood issues he had raised at previous sessions of the Selangor State Assembly Sitting had not been addressed.
Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa) had asked about the number and status of flood mitigation measures in the Klang district.
Izham replied that the state government and the Federal Government had allocated RM133.8mil and RM359.7mil respectively to Selangor DID to implement projects in the district to reduce the risk of floods.
He said these involved 13 projects, which were in various stages of implementation and pre-planning.
These include the Sungai Kandis (Phase 2) flood mitigation project in Klang (32% completion stage), Sungai Rasau (Phase 2) flood mitigation plan in Klang (28%), drainage system upgrading works in Taman Melawis, Klang (66%), upgrading drainage system and building missing link structures in Sungai Rasau (Phase 1) Basin, Klang (77%), building a flood retention pond next to Taman Mutiara Bukit Raja in Klang that is along Shapadu Highway (22%), Sungai Klang flood mitigation plan in Section 25, Shah Alam (13%) as well as Sungai Kapar Kecil and Sungai Kapar Besar flood mitigation plan in Klang and Petaling districts (2%).
Noor Najhan then asked if the flood mitigation measures covered several housing areas in Bukit Kapar, which he said had been affected by flash floods this year and last year.
“This could be due to problems with the internal drainage systems that fall under the local council,” said Izham, noting the locations mentioned.
“One of the things that the multi-agency, coordinated meetings will address is the maintenance of drains that aren’t under any agency’s jurisdiction,” he added.
