Fun run in support of spinal muscular atrophy patients

Over 2,000 participants turned up for the SMA Fun Run 2024.

OVER 2,000 people participated in a charity fun run themed “Together We Care” aimed at raising awareness and support for individuals affected by spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Held in conjunction with the National Sports Day celebration, the run encouraged participants to spot symptoms, manage them and act fast through early detection, treatment and intervention.

The second annual run was hosted by Institute for Medical Research (IMR), in collaboration with Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Research Officers Association of the Health Ministry, Spinal Muscular Atrophy Malaysia (SMAM) and Novartis Malaysia.

Participants included Novartis associates and SMA advocates, who completed 5km and 10km routes at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam in Section 14 of Shah Alam, Selangor.

Proceeds from the run will be donated to SMAM, an organisation dedicated to providing support and resources to SMA patients and their families.

SMA is a rare genetic disorder that weakens muscle control, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks like walking, eating or breathing.

Delays in treatment can compromise the patient’s quality of life, while untreated, it can be life-threatening.

Research Officers Association president Dr Mohd Fairulnizal Md Noh expressed his gratitude for the event’s success.

“We are humbled by the overwhelming support from the public for this year’s SMA Fun Run.The participation highlights the growing awareness of SMA in Malaysia,” he said.

“Together, we can continue educating Malaysians on the importance of early detection and intervention for SMA.”

SMAM president Shakira Jamil described the spirit of togetherness shown at this year’s SMA Fun Run as heartwarming.

“Events like this allow us to shed light on SMA and challenges faced by those living with it.

“Early diagnosis can significantly impact the patient’s journey, helping them live more independent and fulfilling lives.

“We deeply appreciate the community’s support, which allows us to continue our work of raising awareness and providing crucial support for SMA patients and their families,” said Shakira.

Although there is no cure for SMA, early intervention such as physical therapy and advanced treatments help manage symptoms and enhance quality of life, she added.

Novartis supported the event as part of its ongoing commitment to improving awareness and care for SMA patients.

Novartis Malaysia public affairs country head Jegatheswaran Panderengen said, “I am inspired by the strength and resilience of the SMA community.

“This event transcends the act of running; it’s about raising awareness, providing support and creating a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by SMA.”
