TELEPERFORMANCE Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a business process outsourcing (BPO) company with offices in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, has for the first time come on board as the gold sponsor for the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon 2024, scheduled for Dec 15.
Teleperformance Malaysia & Thailand chief executive officer Andy Rangel mentioned that over 200 employees will participate in the event.
“We want to be a bigger part of the Penang community.
“By sponsoring an international event of this scale, it’s an excellent opportunity for exposure for Malaysia overall, our wonderful home city of Penang and the state’s tourism industry,” he said.
Rangel highlighted that the company’s motivation to support this international event stems from the marathon’s history, values and character.
“Not many people know about Teleperformance in Penang. Supporting this event will provide the opportunity for people to know us, our values and what we do here.
“Much like the local and international runners participating in the event, we at Teleperformance embrace our ‘glocal’ (global and local) workforce – employees who embody both global and local perspectives in today’s interconnected environment.
“This concept beautifully aligns Teleperformance with the international marathon event.
“Our team members hail from a rich tapestry of backgrounds and cultures, harmonising their unique qualities and shared experiences to unite as part of a greater whole,” Rangel said in an interview recently.
Since its establishment in 2017 with just 54 employees, Teleperformance in Malaysia has expanded to over 6,500 employees across five sites nationwide with the majority of its team members at its three facilities in Penang.
Teleperformance operates as a multilingual Customer Contact Centre, supporting clients across the Asia-Pacific region.
As a global leader in outsourced omnichannel customer service management, Teleperformance delivers services in multiple languages and dialects to high-end brands worldwide. Headquartered in France, the company has over 300 sites globally, employing approximately 500,000 people across 350 sites in 82 countries.
Rangel also emphasised that participating in the marathon aligns with Teleperformance’s five core values – integrity, respect, professionalism, innovation and commitment.
“The discipline of the runners mirrors the commitment our employees bring to Teleperformance. The fact that the event is being held on Penang mainland for the first time demonstrates innovation, which is one of our core values.
“The marathon’s prestige and credibility reflect the professionalism that is built into Teleperformance’s DNA and our diverse ‘glocal’ employees give us the same global-local connection as the international and local runners,” he said.
The upcoming marathon is the longest bridge run in South-East Asia.
This year, the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon 2024 will be held in Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan and will see runners crossing the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.
Some 30,000 runners are expected to take part.
There will be three categories: full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km) and 10km.
This is the first time in the marathon’s history where it will kick off on the mainland, symbolising the Penang state government’s aim to promote inclusive growth and development across regions of Penang.
This year’s main sponsors are Aspen and Klippa (Ikano Centres). The marathon is also backed by a diverse group of sponsors including Teleperformance, BIG Caring Group, Brooks as official apparel sponsor, Seiko (official timekeeper), Emico (medal sponsor), Counterpain, Himalaya Sports (official sports candy), Island Hospital (official medical partner), N8 Sports Nutrition and a special collaboration with Star Media Group as the official media partner this year.
On Teleperformance’s involvement, Rangel highlighted that the company is not only stable and growing but has also been actively supporting community and health-related events for the past two years.
“Supporting such events allows Teleperformance to engage more deeply and positively impact the local community.
“Since the company was established here, we’ve been involved in school improvement projects such as classroom painting, buying new furniture, beach clean-ups and more.
“We aim to expand on these initiatives in the future. At Teleperformance, we have created an employee engagement structure that allows our team members to propose ideas for community and health programmes.
“Each year, the marathon grows bigger and by supporting it, we also hope to contribute to the growth of Penang’s tourism industry.
“We are also working with the state tourism and creative economy office to support other events like the Bon Odori Festival, which we had sponsored this year.
“At the event, we supported our 200 plus Japanese team members at Teleperformance Penang and showcased our presence with a booth to align with Penang’s future goals,” Rangel explained.
Commenting on the marathon runners, he said, “Every step taken by the runners is a testament to their determination. We should celebrate them as their passion is what drives them forward. The spectators are the energy and support for the racers – they are the heartbeat of the race, cheering the runners on.”
Rangel concluded that Teleperformance looks forward to continuing its support for the Penang Bridge International Marathon and other initiatives as the company continues to grow across Malaysia.
