KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) councillor Datuk Zuraidah Mohd Said joined residents in 13 neighbourhoods for a mega gotong-royong event to clean up and eliminate potential Aedes mosquito breeding spots.
It was a collaboration with residents associations as well as MBDK’s Health Department and Environmental Services Department.
Zuraidah is in charge of Zone 43A, which encompasses the Sementa state constituency.
She urged residents to prevent stagnant water from accumulating around their homes.
“It is the end of the year and many people plan to go on holiday. But before their trip, they should mosquito-proof their homes.
“Pails inside and outside must be covered, toilet seat covers should be down and insecticide placed in places mosquitoes could potentially breed,” she said
MBDK Health Department director Azmi Muji said that in areas with higher cases of dengue fever transmission, the city council worked closely with residents to ensure mosquito control measures are carried out.
“MBDK takes a multi-pronged approach to dengue control that comprises vector control measures, stakeholder engagement and community mobilisation as well as public communication,” he added.
Azmi said as of Nov 24, Klang recorded 7,625 dengue fever cases including two fatalities, compared to the corresponding period last year with 8,098 cases and two deaths.
Klang had 9,164 dengue fever cases and three deaths in the whole of 2023.
Azmi attributed the situation to unusually warm weather and rain in the evenings, which created an ideal breeding environment for mosquitoes.
