Two-session system implemented to address overcrowding at Perak schools


TO alleviate overcrowding, Perak has implemented a two-session system in 37 primary and 69 secondary schools.

State education committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanapiah said these schools were located in urban areas including Ipoh, Kampar, Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Teluk Intan dan Parit Buntar.

In reply to Berhanudin Ahmad (PN-Manong) during the question-and-answer session at the Perak State Assembly sitting in Bangunan Perak Ridzuan, Ipoh, he said the state aimed to address the issue in the long-term by constructing additional buildings and new schools.

To manage classroom sizes, Khairudin said the state adhered to a maximum of 40 students per class policy.

Additional classes may be formed to address overcrowding, he said.

Khairudin said the Perak Education Department had been redeploying teachers throughout the year to ensure there were enough educators.

To deal with teacher shortage, some teachers were being assigned subjects outside their primary field of expertise.

“Between January and October, 223 primary and 140 secondary school teachers were redeployed, with priority given to rural schools as per the Education Ministry’s guidelines,” he said.
