Cultural performances highlight of Deepavali celebration


MBSJ’s Deepavali celebration included dance performances

SOME 1,500 people attended the Deepavali celebration hosted by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) at Dewan Serbaguna MBSJ Batu 14, Puchong, Selangor.

Guests at the event comprised people from various communities and residents.

Also present were Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han, Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Salimmi Che Adzmi@Azmi and Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim.

Highlights included various artistic and cultural performances from the Indian community as well as special food and beverages offered to guests.

The celebration also saw a lucky draw, offering a variety of prizes.

In a statement, MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management Department said it remained committed to assisting and celebrating the city’s community while strengthening bonds of cultural diversity.

This was in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Elsewhere, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) hosted a similar Deepavali celebration, attended by 300 members of its staff.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon attended the dinner held at the MBPJ Banquet Hall in Jalan Yong Shook Lin.

MBPJ’s Corporate Communications Unit said in a statement that the Deepavali celebration was one of its initiatives aimed at strengthening the spirit of unity and cooperation among staff through a celebration filled with camaraderie and cultural elements.

In addition to providing an opportunity to foster closer ties, the event also served to honour the council’s Indian staff for their dedication and commitment in ensuring the delivery of quality services in Petaling Jaya.

The event included a fashion show and talent showpiece by children from MBPJ Children’s Mind Development Centre, a traditional Bharathanatyam dance performance and a Silambam martial arts demonstration.

Guests were also treated to Indian delicacies such as biryani, pani puri and idiyappam.
