COMPETING against more than 466 teams from 14 countries, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) won global recognition for its community projects.
Bringing honour to Malaysia and Selangor, the city council bagged two gold awards at the International Convention on Quality Circles (ICQCC) 2024.
The event that was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, was organised by Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP).
In a media statement, MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management Department said the council sent two teams with high-impact community projects.
“Team 2LAS submitted their ‘Coco Crush’ innovation project.
“They comprised officers from the Environmental Management Department, Landscape Department and Licensing Department.
“Team D’Planner’s project entry was called ‘Low-Carbon Initiatives of Subang Jaya City Council’.
“Their team comprised officers from the Urban Planning Department and Information Technology Department,” said MBSJ’s statement.
The “Coco Crush” project is a green initiative by MBSJ to turn coconut waste, collected from traders around the city, into cocopeat and cocofibre.
It reduces organic waste and provides eco-friendly products that can be used, especially by the agricultural sector.
Cocofibre can be used as mulching for potted plants and is effective for controlling weed growth.
Cocopeat is ideal as a planting medium.
The “Low-Carbon Initiatives of Subang Jaya City Council” project is an effort to mitigate climate change by developing a greenhouse gas inventory management system to calculate the carbon footprint in Subang Jaya.
The statement added that as of mid-November, MBSJ had won 21 awards at the international, national and state levels.
The awards recognise the local council’s commitment towards public services in empowering sustainable development for the local community.
