JOHOR government has allocated some RM10mil in the state budget next year to resolve frequent flash floods at Kampung Mohd Amin and its surrounding areas in Johor Baru.
State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the Sungai Chat flood mitigation project would be carried out next year at a cost of RM10mil involving Kampung Mohd Amin and Kampung Baru as well as surrounding areas.
He added that the project would involve the acquisition of high-powered pumps.
“The project is expected to be carried out by February next year and will be completed within the first quarter of 2026.
“The Sungai Chat flood mitigation project will involve pumping water into the sea to lower the water level in the river during heavy rain and high tide,” he said.
Mohd Jafni added there was also a proposal to build a reservoir to accommodate the water before it was pumped into the sea so that it did not overflow into residential areas.
Several short-term measures by Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) to address flash floods were completed in October and November this year.
“They included installing a flood mitigation pump at the back of Kampung Tambatan surau with a cost of RM550,000, increasing the height of the wall surrounding Sungai Chat to 0.55m and installing a pump at Jalan Mohd Amin at a cost of RM800,000,” he told StarMetro.
Mohd Jafni added that the other short-term measures were upgrading the main drainage and construction of two pumps and flap valve at Padang Sri Gelam at a cost of RM1mil.
He said presently, there were three high-powered pumps owned by Drainage and Irrigation Department that function 24 hours a day at the location.
“The flash flood on Nov 22 was due to rainfall of more than 60mm and a high tide measuring 3.4m, both of which caused water level to increase.
“However, the number of affected houses was fewer than during previous incidents,” he added.
