The GP Sibujaya Extreme Motocross Championship – the highlight of Sibujaya Bike Week – is slated to become a major extreme motorsports tourism attraction in Sarawak.
Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the event had the potential to draw international recognition similar to the Malaysian MotoGP race held in Sepang, Selangor.
“This could have a significant impact on Sarawak’s sports tourism sector,” he said at the opening of Sibujaya Bike Week.
Sempurai added that the event could also promote Sibujaya as a destination.
He said the township’s current population had surpassed 40,000 and this was a sign of Sibujaya’s rapid growth over the past five years.
Situated along the Pan-Borneo Highway, the township was gaining recognition as a promising centre for economic development and residential growth, said Sempurai.
Partnerships between the state government, primary developer Amcorp Sibujaya Sdn Bhd and SRDC had resulted in well-planned commercial and residential zones, he added.
Sempurai said this year’s Sibujaya GP featured renowned riders from Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand and the Philippines.
“I hope the Sibujaya GP and Sibujaya Bike Week continues attracting visitors, including motocross fans from across Sarawak and beyond.” he said.
The biking meet also featured an entertainment stage that created a lively atmosphere.
Also present were SRDC secretary Ng Siang Wei, GP Sibujaya Extreme Motorsports Club president Sii How Ping, Malaysian Motorsport Association representative Roslan Kamaruddin and Amcorp Sibujaya general manager James Ho.
