Thrilling clash of 19 teams at dodgeball game in KL mall

This year's MAD Cup attracted 19 teams.

EXPERIENCE is sometimes crucial in edging the opponent in a dodgeball game, as team Part Time Job demonstrated.

Although most of its members were playing in the National Dodgeball team, the rest of the team nevertheless topped the podium in the finals of the 2024 Malaysia Association of Dodgeball (MAD) Cup co-ed category.

However, their opponents did not let them breeze through.

Team Aces B forced a tie-breaker after drawing 2-2 in the final round.

“The final match was very difficult as the opponent showed no signs of budging,” said Part Time Job player Aaron Hii.

“Anything can happen in a 15-minute game and the match can swing to either side,” he said.

It was a gripping match between both teams as the men from each side tried to take out their respective opponents.

The male players, often taking on the attacker role due to their stronger throws, would often be targetted by the opposing teams.

“Our strategy was to take out the key players from the opponent and counter what the other team was doing.

“I am happy and proud of my team members’ performance as they played very well,” Hii said.

Held at KL Gateway Mall and organised by Prime Dodgeball, the MAD Cup is an annual event by MAD.

Nineteen teams competed for the trophy.

For the bronze-medal placing, Aces A won the match against Skatepark 3-1.

The most valuable male player award went to Au Zhen Nick from Aces B while Elysia Goh from Aces A was crowned the most valuable female player.

Other awards up for grabs such as Outstanding Team Sportsmanship went to Blaze Dodgeball Club.

Federal Territories Youth and Sports Department director Sabran Abd Bahar presented the winners with trophy and medals, while Kelme Malaysia director Louis Fun represented one of the tournament sponsors.

MAD vice-president Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz said he hoped with such active rosters and participation from the grassroots, dodgeball would gain a foothold in regional games.

He said the association was working to get the sport into the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

“At the social level, more people are taking up this sport not only because it is exciting but also because it is beneficial for physical fitness.

“The requirement for a dodgeball game is not much, just a small space, which is why it appeals to the masses,” he added
