AS snow season sets in in earnest in the northern hemisphere, skiing is taking off again.

With the pastime gaining traction among Malaysians, one great destination not too far away is Hokkaido, Japan.

Niseko Village at the foot of 1,308m Mount Niseko Annupuri offers excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions this time of year, besides a number of outdoor activities and scenic views in the summer.

Niseko is often called “Aspen of the East” because it transforms into a winter wonderland during the White Season from early December to March.

YTL Hotels Niseko Village chief executive officer Long Shiau Wee said the annual 18m snowfall creates what has been called a paradise of exceptional off-piste terrain for all skill levels.

Niseko Village boasts a range of winter facilities including comprehensive ski rental services and the celebrated Niseko Snow School.

“With this endless powder, exhilarating adventures and breathtaking scenery, Niseko stands out as one of the world’s premier winter destinations.”

She said Malaysians finding enjoyment in skiing would not be disappointed.

“The Green Leaf Niseko, spa and onsen (hot springs) facilities are huge drawcards.

“A vibrant dining and retail village hub, the Niseko ski field, renowned for its powdery white snow, diverse ski terrains, Niseko Snow School and Niseko Village Kids Club, all make for an excellent getaway.

“Key to Niseko’s appeal is Niseko-yo, a lifestyle experience where gastronomy, shopping and nightlife converge amid the captivating Hokkaido backdrop.

“Niseko Village encompasses Higashiyama Niseko, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve – one of only seven Ritz-Carlton Reserves worldwide and recently honoured with One Michelin Key, and the exclusive Kasara Niseko Townhouse which redefines alpine luxury,” Long added.

There is also Hinode Hills Niseko, a unique blend of residential space with luxury hotel services, and Hilton Niseko Village, named “Best Ski Resort Hotel in Japan” by World Ski Awards on three occasions.

Long said Niseko was a year-long destination with activities designed for winter and summer.

“YTL’s recreational and leisure facilities also include two world-class golf courses.”

The Green Leaf Niseko Village hotel blends modern design with nature’s charm, she highlighted.

“Guests can enjoy the hotel’s amenities including ski-in/ski-out access and a variety of dining options highlighting local seafood and seasonal Hokkaido produce.”

From March 10 to 15, 2025, Niseko is set to host the highly anticipated Snow Machine Music Festival.

“Skiers and snowboarders will enjoy world-class powder by day and an electrifying lineup of international artistes by night,” said Long.

“The festival merges skiing with music in a breathtaking alpine setting, offering an experience with acts like Chase & Status, Hot Chip and Melanie C.

“Snow Machine promises an epic winter adventure,” she said.

Beyond the slopes and music, guests can unwind in Niseko’s famous hot springs and savour Japanese cuisine.

Scenic views and pop-up performances will further enhance this unique fusion of adrenaline and entertainment, making Snow Machine 2025 a complete alpine escape.
