A TENANT finally got her deposit refunded after waiting for about seven months.
Administrative executive Debbee Singa filed a case with the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal against a property marketing and management company.
“I had no other option as the company kept delaying the refund,” the claimant said outside the Tribunal in Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.
Debbee, who is from Miri, Sarawak, and her friend Ruffinna Jok, had rented an apartment near Jalan Bukit Meldrum in Johor Baru.
The duo, who work in Singapore opted for the unit as it was within walking distance of Sultan Iskandar Building customs, immigration and quarantine complex.
The monthly rental of the two-bedroom, one bathroom unit was RM2,000,
In total, she paid RM7,360 to the management company – RM2,000 for a month’s deposit, a month’s rental of RM2,000, utility deposit of RM2,000 and RM1,360 for the tenancy agreement as well as miscellaneous fees.
“We moved in on May 25 last year. Our tenancy agreement was until May 2024.”
Debbee notified the company in April of their intention to vacate the unit in May.
She also arranged for the agent to inspect the unit but he declined to do so, she said.
A week after moving out, another agent contacted Debbee and said the owner would refund RM3,074.80 once the inspection was done.
“I disagreed as the sum was lower than what it should have been after deducting any remaining utility bills and cleaning, plus miscellaneous fees.
“June passed and the money was still not credited into her bank account.
“I decided to file a case with the Tribunal in September,” she said.
Tribunal president Lee Chee Thim ordered the respondent to refund the claimant RM3,475 within two weeks.
The claimant received the money on the spot after the agent credited the sum into her bank account.
