Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) has approved the setting up of pickleball clubs in secondary schools across Sibu, with participating students to receive co-curricular activity points.

This was announced by Bukit Assek assemblyman and Sibu Pickleball Association president Joseph Chieng after receiving an approval letter from the department.

Speaking at a press conference, Chieng said he believed schools would significantly boost the popularity of pickleball in Sibu and Sarawak.

“Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport combining badminton, table tennis and tennis.

“It is expected to debut in the 2026 Malaysia Games.

“The approval from JPNS is a major step forward in nurturing the sport locally,” he said.

He thanked JPNS and Sibu Division Education Office for their swift action and support.

The establishment of pickleball clubs would provide students with more co-curricular options while promoting a healthy, active lifestyle, Chieng said.

“Students participating in these clubs will earn co-curricular activity points, encouraging greater engagement in this dynamic sport,” he noted.

The association is set to collaborate with Sibu Division Education Office to ensure the initiative’s successful rollout.

The first phase will see pickleball clubs established at five to 10 secondary schools by early 2025.

Chieng emphasised the broader benefits of the initiative, calling on schools to actively support the programme.

“This is not just about introducing a sport.

“It is about fostering holistic development among students and enriching their school experience.

“I hope pickleball becomes a beloved activity for students in Sibu and beyond,” he added.
