Tribunal orders partial refund for new electric motorbike

Muhammad Rosyadi: Bike started breaking down after a week.

AN UNEMPLOYED man wants to use the RM4,000 awarded to him by Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal to get a petrol-fuel motorcycle, as his electric motorbike is no longer functioning.

Muhammad Rosyadi Abdullah said he only used the electric vehicle from June until August this year.

The price of the electric motorbike was RM9,999 on Sept 20, 2023, but was reduced to RM7,599 with a rebate of RM2,400 in April this year.

Skim Galakan Penggunaan Motosikal Elektrik or MARiiCas is a rebate by the government to encourage Malaysians to move towards electric vehicles.

“All together I paid RM8,387 including add-on WiFi at RM388 and RM400 for the charger,” Muhammad Rosyadi said when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.

The 43-year-old claimant also said he was not informed by the motorcycle dealer in Masai, Pasir Gudang, about the extra charges for WiFi and charger.

“Initially, I thought the WiFi and charger were included in the RM7,599,” he said.

Muhammad Rosyadi from Johor Baru picked up the motorcycle on June 5 and it started giving him problems about a week later, including abruptly stopping several times while on the road.

He sent the vehicle to a motorcycle repair workshop in Taman Johor Jaya on Aug 20, 2024, where a mechanic suggested there was something wrong with the battery.

“The mechanic suggested replacing the battery for RM98 but I refused as the motorcycle was still under a two-year warranty.

“I wanted him to thoroughly inspect it,” he said, adding that the motorcycle was left at the workshop.

“I went back six days later but the mechanic had done nothing, so I went to the Masai outlet,” said the claimant, who demanded the company refund RM4,193.50 or half of the RM8,387 paid.

The respondent agreed to refund RM4,000 to Muhammad Rosyaidi.

Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to reimburse the amount within two weeks.
