COUNCILLORS at Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) have been told not to wait for complaints but to go to the ground to pro-actively address public grouses.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said waiting for ratepayers to complain before taking action was the old way of solving problems.
He said there would be greater public expectation on the provision of services with the increase in assessment taxes, scheduled to take effect across all local authorities in Selangor next year.
“Attention must especially be given to recurring problems such as floods.
“This is crucial because residents will become frustrated if they have to air their grievances repeatedly on the same issue,” he said during MBSA’s monthly full board meeting.
Though three years have passed, massive floods in Taman Sri Muda in December 2021 remain fresh in the minds of the councillors and department heads.
Touching on the issue of flash floods at Jalan Kebun Barat in Kemuning Greenville, councillor Muhammad Nabil Norhalim said there was urgent need for maintenance of the drainage system in this area.
Due to the number of construction projects, he said many of these drains had been blocked thus impeding water flow.
Councillor Datuk Emran Kadir noted that the area was naturally flood-prone due to its proximity to Sungai Klang.
As such, drainage was not the only issue to consider.
He said flood gate management must also be taken into consideration, where someone should be on duty so that the gates could be opened at crucial times.
As a temporary fix, MBSA will obtain high-capacity pumps to deal with flash floods in Jalan Kebun Barat.
