ISKANDAR Puteri City Council (MBIP) plans to impose a two-hour parking limit for vehicles in commercial areas within its jurisdiction next year.

MBIP Skudai Baru Zone councillor Lim Soon Hai said the move would be discussed at the city council’s full board meeting.

“We have received many complaints from business operators that motorists have been hogging parking spots from early in the morning,” he said in an interview.

The majority of people who park their vehicles in these areas are locals working in Singapore, he added.

Lim said they usually arrived early in the morning, even before most of the businesses opened, and returned late in the evening.

“Customers face problems looking for parking spots, especially on weekdays,” added Lim.

Among the affected locations are Taman Bukit Indah, Taman Tun Aminah, Taman Nusa Bestari 1 & 2, Taman Nusa Perintis 1 & 2, Taman Perling, Taman Sutera Utama and the Gelang Patah bus and taxi terminal.

To alleviate parking issues, Lim said a seven-storey carpark would be built at Taman Bukit Indah adjacent to Granada Hotel next year.

He added that those working in Singapore would find the facility especially useful, once it is completed.

“The two-hour parking limit will be enforced once we get approval from the state government,” added Lim.

On an unrelated matter, he said the city council was in the midst of finalising details to enable business operators to display or place their goods along the five-foot-way of their premises.

Currently, business operators found to be doing so are subject to a RM500 fine.

Lim said businesses allowed to use the five-foot-way would comprise those selling electrical items and electronics, hardware and tyres as well as motor, pet and sundry shops.

“We do not see any issue with this as long as operators do not obstruct pedestrians,” said Lim.
