Tribunal orders refund for cancelled car-wrap

Yong says he paid for car wrapping but changed his mind due to delays.

A logistics executive who had wanted to make aesthetic changes to his German supermini car with car wrapping ended up facing months of delays.

Yong Teck Soon came across a company offering vehicle wrapping services in Taman Nusa Bestari, Johor Baru, while searching online in June.

“I showed the company owner the patterns and wrapping technique I wanted for my car, but he informed me that he did not have the materials for the wrapping at the time,” said Yong when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.

Car wrapping uses a vinyl film to change a vehicle’s outward appearance and is less expensive than a full respray.

The 25-year-old claimant said he met the company owner on June 29 to negotiate details for the car wrapping and paid him RM6,800 via credit card.

“The company owner promised that he would complete the wrapping job within three days of receiving payment,” said Yong, who hailed from Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Baru and worked in Singapore.

The claimant said a month passed with no word from the company owner.

In the meantime, Yong had been in touch with a China-based designer who had created the 3D wrapping patterns he requested.

“The designer told me that he could not give the patterns to the company owner as the latter had failed to pay for materials needed for the 3D vinyl film,” he said.

Yong said the company owner called him on Sept 17 and requested the car be brought in for the wrapping.

“I declined to do so as I had lost faith in him,” said Yong.

The claimant said he tried to call the company owner on Sept 23 to demand his RM6,800 back but the calls went unanswered.

The businessman only agreed to meet him on Sept 28, Yong said, after he threatened to report the matter to the police, and promised to return his money in October.

Yong said the company owner only refunded RM1,000 on Nov 2 and another RM1,000 on Nov 4, after receiving a Nov 1 notice that the case had been filed with the Tribunal.

Tribunal president Lee Chee Thim ordered the respondent to refund the remaining RM4,800 to the claimant within two weeks.
