Agency ordered to refund nurse after maid absconds

Kala Devi: ‘The maid was always on the phone and had to be reminded of her duties.’

A NURSE hired a maid on a one-year contract to take care of her pets but the foreign employee ran away after a month.

M. Kala Devi, 38, paid RM9,000 to an employment recruitment agency with an office in Kuala Lumpur.

She made the first payment of RM1,500 on July 7, followed by RM2,500 on July 26 and RM5,000 on Aug 8, 2024.

“The maid in her 30s reported for work on Aug 7 and was to be paid RM1,500 monthly,” said the claimant when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar in Johor Baru.

Kala Devi, who works in Singapore, said that apart from taking care of the canines, which included preparing their meals, the maid was also tasked with cleaning the house.

“The five dogs were strays or abandoned that I rescued,” she added.

Kala Devi said the maid had no problem taking care of the dogs during the first few days but was always on the phone and had to be reminded to feed the dogs.

She added that the maid claimed to have worked in Singapore where she took care of an elderly woman there, and had also worked at a food stall in Kuala Lumpur.

Kala Devi said one day, she went to send her car for service at 2pm and left the maid at home with the dogs.

When she returned at around 6pm, the maid was nowhere to be seen.

“She left the house on Sept 7, exactly a month after she came to work with me,” she said.

Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM9,000 to the claimant within two weeks.
