New Year countdown celebrations generated 3.62 tonnes of rubbish, says Alam Flora

THERE was an 18% increase in rubbish collection in the capital city for the New Year’s Eve celebration compared to last year, with 3.62 tonnes of rubbish collected from three major locations following the countdown celebrations, according to Alam Flora Sdn Bhd.

In a statement, the company noted that the major cleanup areas were Bukit Bintang, Dataran Merdeka, and the vicinity of PETRONAS Twin Towers (KLCC).

The cleanup began at 10pm on Dec 31 and was completed by 8am on Jan 1.

Alam Flora chief executive officer Shariman Yusuf Mohamed Zain reported that the largest amount of rubbish was collected from Dataran Merdeka.

"The rubbish collected at Dataran Merdeka amounted to 1.67 tonnes, followed by 1.02 tonnes gathered near KLCC and 0.93 tonnes from Bukit Bintang.

"To ensure smooth operations, we mobilised 141 personnel, including management staff, pre-clearing teams, drivers, and general crew at these key locations," said Shariman.

He added that three compactor vehicles were deployed for efficient rubbish collection and water jets were used to clean pavements, particularly in high-footfall areas such as Dataran Merdeka.

Additionally, 24 mobile rubbish bins with 660-litre capacities were strategically placed to support waste disposal efforts.

Shariman mentioned that this year’s rubbish collection was still manageable, especially at Dataran Merdeka.

"The crowd size at each location varied. Nevertheless, our team was prepared to manage rubbish collection efficiently, regardless of the size of the crowd," he explained.

Alam Flora highlighted its commitment to maintaining a clean and hygienic environment during any celebration in the city.

"The operations reflect Alam Flora’s ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness, aligning with the company’s mission to enhance community well-being and contribute to a greener future," Shariman said.
