Thousands celebrate the new year, aspiring towards better future

REVELLERS ushered in 2025 with vibrant celebrations, reflecting hopes for a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead.

Store analyst Aimi Wahida Ahmad Zabri, 38, said she had a productive year in 2024 and hoped this year would be better.

“I hope the economy will get better since our country is blessed with abundant resources,” she said at Straits Quay promenade, Penang during New Year’s Eve.

She said she also wanted to lead an active lifestyle in an effort to be healthy.

Spotted during the New Year’s Eve celebration were Qian Hui, 25, with her family and friends.

The jovial content creator from Bukit Mertajam praised the Federal Government’s efforts to implement mega projects like the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT).

“It is in line with Penang’s goals in becoming a smart city by 2030, and the Penang landscape will surely change positively after this,” she said.

She hoped the LRT project would be expanded to Seberang Perai in the near future.

Gym owner T. Ragu, 30, said business was brisk in 2024, but wanted his business to grow more in the new year.

He hoped 2025 would be a prosperous and productive year for the nation.

His wife A. Thia, 34, said they also hoped to start a family this year.

The New Year’s Eve celebration saw thousands of people thronging popular spots on Penang island and the mainland.

There were large crowds in Gurney Drive and Esplanade on the island as well as Auto City Juru and Pantai Robina on the mainland.

The crowd, which comprised mostly groups of family and friends, gathered for dinner with their loved ones before counting down to the new year.

The highly anticipated countdown celebration featured fireworks, live performances and activities to usher in 2025.

A fireworks display took place at five main locations – at The TOP in Komtar, Esplanade, Straits Quay, Feringghi Bay and Auto City Juru.

Live performances by the Bunga Raya band, dancers and DJ Suicide Teaser at Straits Quay Promenade kept the crowd entertained throughout the night.

Over 10,000 revellers came out for the countdown celebration at the promenade.

At The TOP, a countdown party was hosted at Level 68 with a breathtaking fireworks display at midnight.

The evening commenced with a buffet dinner at 7pm that offered guests a variety of culinary delights before the countdown party started.

Attendees were treated to live entertainment by Deejay Mingyi and Deejay Parisz, creating an atmosphere that kept spirits high throughout the night.

Some guests also went home with lucky draw prizes.

Elsewhere in Chulia Street and Batu Feringghi, revellers partied at restaurants and pubs in the area.
