Every child deserves early education, says state Deputy Minister
Sarawak government is aiming for 100% preschool enrolment by 2030, state Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.
He emphasised that early education would lay the foundation for human capital development and prepare children for their educational journey.
In line with the principle of “No Child Left Behind,” he stressed that every child deserved equal opportunities regardless of their background.
“Early education must be an inclusive platform, accommodating children from all social and economic backgrounds or ability.
“By ensuring equal opportunities, we provide every child with a strong foundation for future success,” he said.
Tiang’s speech was read by community leader Kapitan Lau Sei Kwong during the 33rd Sibu Zone SeDidik kindergarten convocation ceremony.
Tiang said SeDidik accepted children of all physical, cognitive and socio-economic statuses.
Last year, 193 children with special needs were registered with SeDidik Sarawak.
Tiang, who is Pelawan assemblyman, said teachers were trained to use effective methods to nurture children’s potential.
According to him, 162 teachers currently hold degrees or diplomas in Early Childhood Education while five teachers are completing their studies.
He also highlighted the success of the “Kids Bits & Bytes” digital literacy programme implemented in 64 SeDidik Sarawak centres, benefitting 713 children.
Additionally 427 tablets have been distributed to enhance learning, he said.
“Digital literacy equips children with the skill to adapt to school environment and the technology-driven world,” he said.
Other initiatives mentioned include the “Young Leaders Programme”, “Young Savers Programme” and “Learning Through Play”, which aim to enhance learning and character development.
SeDidik has allocated RM1.9mil for a “Food Programme for Children” this year to ensure balanced nutrition for optimal physical and mental growth.
SeDidik Sarawak general manager Ayub Dahari’s speech, read out by senior manager (corporate services sector) Siti Rodziah Bunsu Drahman, stated that the state government support facilitated the installation of closed-circuit TV (CCTV) camera systems at SeDidik centres for child safety.
Between 2021 and 2024, RM19.8mil was spent on upgrading the centres and acquiring new premises.
At the ceremony, 85 children received their kindergarten completion certificates.
