Top Muay Thai fighters to converge on Sandakan for Elopura Fights

KOTA KINABALU: Thousands are expected to visit Sabah’s north-eastern district of Sandakan to witness Elopura Fights: Reunion of Champions, an event promising a treat for Muay Thai enthusiasts and a boost for local tourism.

Set to take place on Jan 11 and 12 at SMJK Tiong Hua Sandakan, the tournament will showcase top-tier Muay Thai talent, celebrated fighters, and an opportunity for community engagement.

Sandakan Muay Thai Association president Mohamad Ajman Ajmain said the event will feature around 120 amateur and professional bouts, with participants from Malaysia and Thailand.

Sanctioned by the Malaysian Muay Thai Association and the Sabah Muay Thai Association, and supervised by international bodies the International Federation of Muay Thai Associations (IFMA) and the World Muay Thai Council (WMC), the tournament promises adherence to global standards.

The Sabah Education Department recognises it as an official extracurricular activity for student athletes, further encouraging youth participation in the sport.

While amateur bouts will run from 8am to 4pm on the two days, the spotlight will shift to professional fights during the night sessions from 7pm to 11pm.

Local champions 23-year-old Riedzwan Norsyahmie Daud, who is set to face a fighter from Thailand, and Dazaisy Hafiyy Aznee are expected to deliver thrilling performances to make the local audience proud.

Taking the excitement to another level, Muay Thai legends Ali Yaakub, known as "Captain Malaysia", and Hasril Nazmi, famously dubbed "Dancing Boy", will make special appearances.

Their participation is expected to elevate the event’s profile and inspire the next generation of fighters.

“Elopura Fights is more than just a sporting competition, it is a catalyst for economic growth.

"By attracting participants, officials and fans from across the country and abroad, the event is poised to stimulate Sandakan’s local economy," said Ajman.

He added that hotels, eateries, transport operators and cultural attractions are expected to see increased activity, giving Sandakan a push as a sports tourism destination.

The tournament promises a dynamic start to the year for the district, blending sports, culture and tourism into a single platform.

“By fostering community spirit, nurturing athletic talent, and boosting economic development, Elopura Fights: Reunion of Champions aims to leave a lasting legacy for the region,” Ajman added.
